A Full Review on Benefit They're Real! Makeup Line

by - Tuesday, November 11, 2014

I get a lot of questions from my friends regarding the spaces between the lash lines and their eyeliner. They usually bitch about why they have nasty spaces between those and don't look right when they open their eyes. Well friends, it is what it is: spaces. Ha! No scientific terms for that one or some deeper explanation. Those spaces appear because you don't get to apply between those hairs in your lash lines! I kept my focus on the push-up liner because I think that it is the most "unique" in the line making it the star product from the They're Real! Makeup Line.

More after the break...

Benefit They're Real! Line

Here's a little background about this liner from the Benefit website:

It’s the FIRST EVER lash-hugging gel liner in a pen! This matte black gel formula won’t smudge, budge or dry out, and the innovative soft AccuFlex™ Tip hugs your lashline from corner to corner. The closer the line, the bigger the eye!
  • 24-hour* & waterproof
  • *Instrumental test on 19 panelists
  • 91% said it was longwearing*
  • 88% said it hugged the lashline*
  • 84% said eyes looked visibly larger*
  • *Results observed in a consumer panel survey on 32 women after 2 weeks
Double the REAL! Wear they’re real! push-up liner and they’re real! mascara together for beyond longer lashes AND bigger-looking eyes.

The first few times I used it, it was fine. But now when the product comes up the tube it seems to take forever for it to dispense and you end up suddenly with a heap of it come out. Then it will break off mid-application which is a little frustrating specially if you are not an expert eye-liner user. It also has a slightly chalky consistency (sort of like a paste that has gone a bit dry), it's not like a liquid or a pencil type that you can get it to go perfectly sharp.

Be careful about twisting some product out of it continuously because you can end up with too much product on the tip. It is very hard to see if you have pushed up enough or too much of the product and there is no way to retract it if a huge chunk suddenly pops out.
I love that it does get in between those spaces between the lashes - it is a great tool on its own. If you find yourself not getting used to the product itself but rather liking the sturdy rubber applicator, try using it by dipping the tip of the rubber pen in liner pots that are usually cream or gel. It will come out brilliantly!

I think someone should come out with an applicator brush like this with a rubber tip and sell it individually! Just a thought :) Ha!
Although a good innovative way to get in between those lashes, I found that this pen didn't do anything special that any other pencil liner won't do. I very much wanted to love this product so much! The marketing was great too. I got this from Benefit at their last event, but I remember watching they beauty expert do a demo about this liner at the store during one of my impromptu visits and loved it, but when I tried it at home, I realized that the affair ended there. I must be using it wrong.
One tip in using this eyeliner pen is dispensing just the right amount of product on a stainless palette and using an angled brush or an eyeliner brush. Dip the brush on the product and line your eyes as you normally would!

MY OVERALL RATING (PUSH-UP LINER): ★★★

THEY'RE REAL! MASCARA

I only got a sample size of the They're Real! Mascara but it was more than enough to be used for more than 2 weeks to make a fair review on this product.

According to the Benefit Website:

They're real! lengthens, curls, volumizes, lifts & separates. Our jet black, long-wearing formula won’t smudge or dry out. A specially designed brush reveals lashes you never knew you had!

What else you need to know:
  • 94% saw dramatic length & volume*
  • 90% saw base-to-tip curl*
  • 94% saw visible lift*
  • 100% saw long-wearing results*
  • *Results observed in a consumer panel survey

I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about this particular mascara from Benefit. So when I ended up with a travel size one in my press kit from Benefit I decided to give it a try and truly assess what I think of the mascara in my own opinion.

I like how it gave my eyelashes a reasonable length and a bit of volume. I have fine hairs on my lashes and this mascara coated them real well and defined them. Even though this travel size is small, the brush is what you will get in the actual size product.
I don't know if I will purchase the full size because it is expensive and why pay so much if you remove it at the end of the day, if anything I will just purchase the travel size and wear it on special occasions.

This mascara is not waterproof but it's certainly water resistant. I wore all day in an outdoor event  and it survived the humidity, oily and sweaty lids! It does not come off too easily with eye makeup remover though (in spite of me using Clinique Take the Day Off Makeup Remover, but comes off easily with the They're Real! Remover (which is coming up next in this feature).

It seems to hold the curl, lengthen and slightly thicken the hairs, and not to mention -separate the lashes without making them look clumped. It doesn't sting the eyes too! My eyes are quite sensitive from fumes from eye products but this didn't sting my eyes at all!

MY OVERALL RATING (MASCARA): ★★★

THEY'RE REAL! REMOVER

Benefit They’re Real! Remover is what Benefit calls an easy-off waterproof eye makeup remover. So basically, it is an eye makeup remover from the They're Real! makeup line from Benefit. If you have been convinced from my review about using They're Real! Push-up Liner and Mascara, I imagine you’ll automatically want to pick this one up too from the store.

I received this remover from the Benefit event a couple of months back and I was quite excited to try it! As I have reviewed before, the mascara comes off quite hard so a remover that is designed specifically to remove the mascara and the liner, that would be awesome.
It took me about 2 rounds of massaging the cream on my eyes until I got all of them off, and after that I still had to use a foaming cleanser to remove all of the gook and the oily residue that was left around my eye area.

The They're Real! Remover is a cream-based remover that promises to remove waterproof mascara, I am not sure if this works for all brands of waterproof mascara or can only be used with the They're Real! eye product line. It's actually gentle, but really strips off the mascara without shedding a few hairs along the way! It is advised to be squeezed onto a cotton pad or ball and sweep it on your eye area. I however have a different method. I'll show you later.
Benefit They're Real! Remover 50ml, PhP 1,000
What I do, is I basically apply a small dollop of cream on the area and massage in circular motions, gently until all the product has been "loosened" before I wash it off. Wiping with cotton pad can result to shedding of your lashes from the constant rubbing motion, so I do this instead.
It's a little bit messy though, but who would see you remove your makeup anyway, right? If you are a professional makeup artist using this on your client though, I recommend using a cotton pad.
After rinsing with water, this is the result:
This remover actually reminds me of Pond's cold cream, but more luxe. So here I am wearing the push-up liner and the mascara from the They're Real! line, about to use the remover:
By massaging the cream on your lids, it loosens all the makeup effectively without pulling on the skin and the lashes. This method will also get the products in between each individual lash hair and onto your skin really shaking the products loose.

Make sure that you do not open your eyes while using this product. Although it doesn't sting, it transfers a thin film of oil on your eyes making it really hard to wash off with running water. So your vision might be blurry for a while. So try to keep your eyes shut.
I think this is a good eye makeup remover to keep handy in your travel kit because it effectively removes waterproof makeup. Plus, it's flat tube packaging makes it a space saver in your cosmetic train case when travelling!

    1. I will give the mascara another try :) My initial use is that it weighs my lashes down but maybe if I keep using it I will get used to how it really works :)

  3. I got the mascara in a birthday gift from Sephora. So far I like it for a high end mascara, it's very nice formal to work with. I find that if you like dryer formula's just wait a little bit for this to get that way, it was a little to moist right from the start. If you want a high end mascara than this is a great, on a regular bases i wouldn't wear it because of the price though.

    1. So true about the price, I guess it takes a while to get used to the very moist formula too! I have to "dry it out" a little bit so it sticks to my stubborn lashes and hold the curl! Hehehe... Thank you for stopping by!

  5. That mascara! I love that it works well on me even when I choose to skip the lash curler. It actually holds a curl pretty darn well, and I've also used it outdoors all day while sweating profusely. I'm a believer. And to think that it isn't waterproof... But I've had a hard time removing it, actually. I use a dual-phase eye makeup remover, the same one I use with all my waterproof mascaras. This is a bit of a challenge to take off pa nga eh. I have to soak it in a remover-dampened cotton pad for longer than the time it takes for my drugstore waterproof mascaras to dissolve. Grabe. :)) I'd re-purchase the travel size rin as I perceive it as more sulit. Besides, I don't use mascara every single day, so sayang if I just had to throw a full-sized one away every three months. Yikes.
