The Affordable Eyebrow: Nichido Minerals Precise Eye Pencil

by - Thursday, April 03, 2014

Growing up, I was the kid with thick bushy brows. I was often teased for having unibrow and I grew up thinking I was cursed (#youcantsitwithus). But now that thick brows are sooooo in! I am blessed to have been being born with bangs-like brows (who's the unibrow now?!). I am very happy with my brows now, although I just need the constant grooming though which can get pretty tiring.

In spite of me having thick brows, it's still unruly if left un-groomed without threading (I personally prefer threading), or they're still sparse when not having to fill them in with eyebrow products.

Nichido Mineral Precise Eye Pencil in Taupe, PhP 138.00

I was never really the brow products kinda gal because I thought I didn't need them. As a makeup artist you would think that I would obsess about my own brows too. But no, I was more obsessed with skin care than my brows.

It was only in 2009 (already being in the industry for 5 years at that time) did I get into the whole eyebrow groove.

(Click READ MORE to know more...)

When I'm doing makeup on another person's face, I've always thought brows to be crucial to a person's whole look. But to myself, I didn't think I needed it. Until one day, I just had my brows threaded for a shoot for Wedding Essentials featuring my engagement, and Omar Ermita did my makeup. He did my brows fantastically, and I have been hooked since then. I have gone through a lot of brow products since 2009 and now I'm about to try something new.

On a whim, I wanted to try Nichido's eyebrow pencil after seeing a bunch of them at the Nichido counter. Being my curious self, I bought myself one. I figured if I didn't like it, I could always give it to my cousins who would always raid my stash. LOL

I am loving the raw-wood kinda look of this pencil. Reminds me of Skin Food, don't ask me why. The texture of the pencil is khol-like and I found it to be too soft. I am used to hard pencils for brows so using something of this kind is a first for me.

Here are my brows in raw form. Don't mind the "before" caption because I took this photo for my review on the Pixi Flawless Poreless Face Primer last month. It was only when I was writing this review did I realize that I didn't have a before shot of my brows. Woopsy!

It took me a while to get used to controlling the pencil. I used too much pressure on the left side of the photo (my right brow) so you can see the harsh lines. And as I moved on to my left brow, I was more used to it and had more control.

Photographed below is a closer look on my right brow which  I had put too much product on. I was so used to using powder that I had used the same amount of pressure on initial contact with my skin. Forgive the excess hairs on top and below the arch, I still haven't gone to the salon!

Here's another frontal photo:

All of these photos were taken 2 weeks ago, and now I can say that I am more used to the pencil. I am also loving the shade because it goes with my blonde hair perfectly. I have been using this pencil ever since and I can say that I can control it more now!

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS:
Length of usage before review: 2 weeks

PROS
  • Good choices for shades.
  • Affordable.
  • Highly pigmented so you don't need to put too much pressure.
  • Easily available.
  • Sweat-proof.
  • Long lasting.
  • Works on any skin type.
  • Glides on easily.
  • Easily sharpened with sharpener (just make sure your sharpener is sharp).
  • Will fill in your brows even with light feather strokes!
  • Excellent shade (Taupe) for women with blonde or highlighted hair.

NEUTRAL
  • Takes a while to get used to if you are used to another form of eyebrow product like powder, pen type, etc.
  • Formula is too soft for me (although some women prefer this).
  • On areas you put too much pressure on can be really obvious specially on photos with flash photography.

CONS
  • Packaging says "Precise Eye Pencil" so I don't know if this is really a brow product or an eye liner being marketed as a brow pencil. They should clear that up.

  1. Hi Sabs! I also use this. You're right, you don't need a ton of effort to use to fill in your brows. Light strokes will do the trick. However due to the stifling hot weather I touch up a little more than usual, I guess that's expected right? hehe Another alternative that I'm also hooked on is Nature Republic. It's a Korean organic makeup brand. It's priced the same as Nichido but this pencil is longer. Plus, it has a brow brush on the end. :)

    1. For me it stays put so I guess it really does depend on the skin type :) We all have different reactions to products, which is very normal :) Yes of course Nature Republic! I love their Foot Peeling Masks ♥ Oooooh! So you say they're eyebrow pencil is nice ei? I'll have to give that a try! Thanks for the tip! HUGS! ♥

  2. I have this one in black. I use it to tight line my upper lash line for fuller looking lashes.
I think Nichido has a good line of eyeliners. I also use their eyeliner pen which stays all day long on my oily lids! :)

    1. Nichido has a lot of promising products and I am proud to say that when I was in makeup school 10 years ago, Nichido was a life saver because it was affordable and the quality was top notch! Ooooh! I wanna try that eyeliner pen too! Thanks for the recommendation! ♥

  3. Agreed, it is too soft for my taste too. But what I do is set it with a brow powder! :)

  4. This is actually the eyebrow pencil that I have been using for quite a long time now and I am loyal to it. I just love the shade, not too dark, and also the look of the pencil itself. The only thing that I don't like about it is, it's too soft, but lately I've discovered a way to harden the formula by keeping it inside the fridge.

    1. Thank you! Well, I wouldn't edit photos (except maybe making images brighter when my lighting is poor), and most specially wouldn't edit results because I want to be as honest as possible, so you guys can make an informed decision when picking out products out there ♥ Thank you so much for noticing my efforts! If you keep reading, I'll keep writing! ♥ HUGS!

  8. Hi Ms. Sab! I really love your taste about cosmetics, So CLASSY! The nichido eyeliner is very affordable, but I'm using a cheaper eye liner that I bought at goods.ph (https://www.goods.ph/eye-liner-pencil-070069-19547.html), a month ago and I'm thinking if I'm going to buy a nichido eyeliner and I will use it as my back-up eye liner. Thank you Ms. Sab!
