Never Again!

by - Wednesday, February 06, 2013

Have you heard of the saying, "There is a sucker born every minute."?

I never believed it would happen to me because I have always been so smart in buying makeup, until now.

I had a meeting today at Robinson's Galleria. The word from the grapevine was that they had a good PX Store at the basement that sell reasonably priced perfumes and other cosmetics. I forgot the name of the store, but anyway, after my meeting -I headed out in search of this store.

True enough, there it was. I loved that the store had all perfumes known to man in their quaint little store. I bought myself a bottle of Clinique Happy (with a sticker that still had the $ Price tag on it). While I was waiting for my turn to pay at the cashier, the old woman behind the counter showed me their small selection of "original makeup" that were consigned by a flight attendant who would travel to Europe on a regular basis.

There was only one brand I recognized, and it was L'Oreal.

Yah yah, I know... I should have known better. But the sales lady guaranteed it's authenticity and that it was their best seller. I checked the back of the packaging and said that the product was made in France.

I was about to return the powder back in little tray but it was my turn to pay at the cashier and the sales lady was pushing me to buy it. So I was like "what the hell, if the color doesn't turn out nice, at least I get a good review out of it."

When the cashier rang the product, I saw that it only cost PhP 350.00 ($8.50), an alarm went ringing in my head warning me that makeup would never be that cheap specially with a brand like L'Oreal. That should have been my first sign. But anyhoo... I shook my head to dismiss the thought and paid for my perfume and my makeup.

As soon as I got home, the first thing I did was check the makeup out. And boy I tell you, disappointment as soon as I broke that seal and opened the box was an understatement. I was literally freaking out.

The smell that unleashed as soon as I tore that plastic wrapper screamed "FAKE!" It had a cheap sweet smell that I can't even begin to describe. I took a deep breath and told myself to give it a chance. Maybe it's just the smell right?

Let me tell you, as soon as that product slid out of the box, I wanted to throw it away. The packaging looked cheap and the plastic was all scratched up and sh*t. The latch to close and open didn't work properly, and it just felt cheap.

When I finally got to open the case, the cosmetic just had this over powering smell of sweet cheap cosmetics. And get this, the powder sparkled. And I mean that literally. It had specks of glitter.

The second layer had cream foundation. In all fairness, the consistency was right. It was creamy, it didn't feel chalky and thick on the skin. Oh yah, the compact didn't come with a sponge. Hahaha!

So, I finally got the courage to try it on and just really see for myself the effect of this "sparkling powder", who knows right?

I smoothed the cream foundation first with a sponge all over my face which was white by the way. Which was weird because the shade looked yellow, but really, it was just white. But after smoothing the product with my fingertips, it blended a little better.

I then set the cream foundation with the "sparkling" powder which made my face pink/gray rather than making it look radiant.

The foundation didn't cover my freckles which would mean that it was a medium coverage. As you can see, there are white spots all over my face because of the glitter. Instead of making my skin look iridescent, they looked like white dust all over my face.

You know what the worse part is? My entire face itched like crazy just a mere 5 minutes after wearing the makeup.

I'm surprised I still managed to smile for the photo.

I guess I just have to accept the fact that... I've been stiffed. That's 350 bucks I'll never see again. It has been recorded that at 1:15PM today, a sucker named Sabs Hernandez was born. LOL. Lessons learned.

  14. Sometimes, I see stalls in bazaars selling cosmetics and fragrances for a cheaper price compared to malls. Some are original but I think most are fake so I am quite hesitant and apprehensive at the same time. Thanks for sharing this post. Things like this happen often, so it's a lesson learned. :)

  16. The glitters are all over your face. >_< I guess the only positive thing that happened is you only paid PHP 350. Imagine paying more for buying a fake Loreal product. There are a lot of buyers who are deceived for buying fake MAC products online. :P I'm quite thankful there are reviews and tips for spotting fake makeup products. Thanks for the heads up, Ms. Sabs!

Don't be too hard on yourself, anyone can make a mistake like that. I ordered the worst cheap fake brushes on ebay once and the blue dye leeched out of those brushes like crazy, I even powdered myself blue! Ahhhhhyyyyy.... lesson learned :)
