My Top 5 TheBodyShop Preggy Picks!

by - Sunday, August 31, 2014

Before I got pregnant, I didn't care much for reading labels. Well, at least not that super strict about parabens or any other harmful ingredients because I believed that in small doses, it was ok. Lately though, I have been more conscious about the skin care that I put on my face because I can't live without skin care so better to be safe than sorry.

So I set aside all my other skin care that had a list of ingredients 2 pages long and stuck with skin care that are easier to read and decipher the ingredients list. I am not saying that I am limited to The Body Shop now that I am pregnant, but The Body Shop is now a staple in my regimen, on top of the other natural, preggy-safe skin care brands that I have now on my dresser.

So if you are an expectant mother and are worried about which skin care is safe to use, read on! I have done the research for you us!

The Body Shop may not be 100% all natural, but that's OK because the ingredients they use that may not be 100% natural are derived from nature and still very safe to use. No chemicals are being used. Although, here's the kicker, all-natural is not always better, yes, you read that correctly. There are many all-natural ingredients that are irritants and can cause problems with the skin. Stabilizers and natural preservatives are needed to extend the longevity of the products on your shelf, and will make the natural ingredients in your skin care more stable that won't irritate the skin.

Let me start with my morning regimen. Ever since my hormones have gone haywire, my skin is drier more than usual. On some days though, I feel so oily! I need a moisturizer that will help quench the dehydrated skin, and yet be light on days I feel so oily.

The Body Shop's Vitamin E Aqua Boost Sorbet is a skin-quenching moisturizer, which is a new addition to the much loved Vitamin E skin care range. Skin needs water to stay plump and hydrated.
FULL INGREDIENTSAqua/Water/Eau (Solvent), Glycerin (Humectant), Dimethicone (Skin Conditioning Agent), Alcohol Denat. (Solvent), Silica (Absorbent), Butyrospermum Parkii Butter/Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter (Skin Conditioning Agent - Emollient), Sodium Acrylates Crosspolymer-2 (Absorbent), Phenoxyethanol (Preservative), Divinyldimethicone/Dimethicone Crosspolymer (Film Former), Ammonium Polyacrylolydimethyl Taurate (Emulsifier), Polysorbate 20 (Emulsifier), Tocopherol (Antioxidant), Triticum Vulgare Germ Oil/Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil (Emollient), Glycine Soja Oil/Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil (Emollient/Skin Conditioner), Caprylyl Glycol (Skin Conditioning Agent), Xanthan Gum (Viscosity Modifier), Parfum/Fragrance (Fragrance), Menthol (Fragrance/Cooling Agent), Sodium Hydroxide (pH Adjuster), C12-13 Pareth-23 (Surfactant), Linalool (Fragrance Ingredient), C12-13 Pareth-3 (Emulsifier), Menthoxypropanediol (Flavour), t-Butyl Alcohol (Denaturant), Benzyl Salicylate (Fragrance Ingredient), Geraniol (Fragrance Ingredient), Citric Acid (pH Adjuster), CI 14700/Red 4 (Colorant).
Vitamin E Aqua Boost Sorbet contains their Aqua Sphere technology - which is microscopic moisture spheres that act like tiny reservoirs and hold hundreds of times weight in pure water.
With each pot containing over 2 million Aqua Spheres, it delivers a 24-hour feed of moisture to your skin without making you look greasy or oily. This moisturizer also contains mineral particles that help to absorb oil and mattify and the feather-light, sorbet texture simply sinks into the skin, so you can stay shine-free, fresh and confident all through out your pregnancy!
It is such a delight to use because it smells like food! And you know, if you are pregnant, food is your best friend. LOL

The best thing is, you can keep it in your refrigerator so that it will have a lasting cooling effect on the skin! Isn't that a delight? I sometimes use it as a makeup primer. I just let it seep into my skin real well about 5 to 10 minutes before I apply my foundation. Everything in the SORBET line can be kept in the refrigerator to help you keep cool in the summer, or during your preggy hot flashes!
If you are used to using a makeup primer, and not sure about using your current primer now that you're pregnant, you can switch to using TBS' All-In-On 5-Action Perfector, makeup primer. You can use this alone or under makeup! It blurs your pregnancy acne breakouts!
FULL INGREDIENTSIsododecane (Solvent), Dimethicone (Skin Conditioning Agent), Vinyldimethyl/Trimethylsiloxysilicate Stearyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer (Absorbent/Bulking Agent), Silica (Absorbent), Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer (Viscosity Increasing Agent), Isononyl Isononanoate (Emollient/Skin Conditioner), Polymethyl Methacrylate (Emollient), Sclerocarya Birrea Seed Oil (Skin Conditioning Agent - Emollient), Ethylene Brassylate (Masking Agent), Tocopheryl Acetate (Antioxidant), Laureth-4 (Emulsifier/Surfactant).
I wasn't able to make it to the event, so I had no idea what to expect when I first tried it out. First, I was like "What is this? It's just a primer!" But it's not just your run of the mill makeup primer, the InstaBlur joins the best-selling All-In-One makeup family from The Body Shop so this is effectively a skin benefitting makeup product, just like all TBS makeups.
It acts as a primer that goes on smoothly to hide imperfections and reduce shine, I know I know, it sounds like just a regular primer. But this one BLURS your imperfections giving the appearance of perfect, glowing skin even without foundation. Oh, and did I say that this is loaded with Vitamin E? It moisturizer the skin, BIG TIME.

The best thing about the InstaBlur, is that you can opt for using it alone for a no-shine, no-makeup look. It is quickly absorbed by the skin and sits on top of your skin making your skin look instantly matte and fresh. There's a very light fragrance and absolutely no color at all. It is suited for all skin tones and type which is great coz there is no fear of mismatching colors and provides a blended look transition from face to neck easily. Or you can opt to wear it under foundation or your BB Cream for a more flawless and even skin tone look, and makes your makeup last the whole day!
I have found that this InstaBlur is most useful on busy mornings, when I don't have the time (nor energy) to apply a full face of make-up, but not also to worry about scaring people too much with my dry dull skin. In recent makeup application on myself, I have found that the InstaBlur is an excellent primer for my foundation on days when my face has decided to freak-out hormonally, and I do have a bit of time to take some care in my appearance.

I never used to care too much about makeup primers, but with this blurring primer, my blemishes are toned done, and masks them well specially with a good foundation or BB Cream on top of it! It applies and feels just like any other makeup primer so if you are used to primers, you will love this!
When it comes to applying foundation, I know by now you feel so lazy about doing your usual makeup face pre-pregnancy. That's why recently, I have been opting for time-saving makeup like TBS' Tea Trea Flawless BB Cream!

Yes, it contains all the BB Cream benefits, but they added Tea Tree which soothes troubled skin. Ergo, it makes hormonal breakouts tame and at bay. I always feel guilty about smearing make-up onto my skin when I'm having a bad skin day (which is pretty often nowadays)m but with this Tea Tree BB Cream keeps my skin calm and flawless looking when I finally feel up and about (meaning, when morning sickness is not as bad! LOL)
As well as doing the great job of covering up those blemishes and spots, the tea tea works its purifying magic to help clear up the nasties to make you feel more comfortable and confident in your own skin again. The Tea Tree BB Cream comes in three universal shades, and the cream glides and blends seamlessly into your skin.

FULL INGREDIENTSAqua/Water/Eau (Solvent), C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate (Emollient), Alcohol Denat. (Solvent), Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (Emollient), Glycerin (Humectant), Cetearyl Olivate (Skin Conditioning Agent), Cetearyl Alcohol (Emulsifier), Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2 (Emollient), Dimethicone (Skin Conditioning Agent), Sorbitan Olivate (Emulsifying Agent), Myristyl Myristate (Emollient), Butyrospermum Parkii Butter/Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter (Skin Conditioning Agent - Emollient), Phenoxyethanol (Preservative), Caprylyl Glycol (Skin Conditioning Agent), Glycine Soja Oil/Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil (Emollient/Skin Conditioner), Polysorbate 60 (Surfactant), Cetyl Alcohol (Emulsifier), Calophyllum Inophyllum Seed Oil (Skin Conditioning Agent), Melaleuca Alternifolia Leaf Oil/Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil (Natural Additive), Xanthan Gum (Viscosity Modifier), Sodium Glycerophosphate (Oral Care Agent), Disodium EDTA (Chelating Agent), Myristyl Alcohol (Emulsifier/Emollient), Stearyl Alcohol (Emollient), Limonene (Fragrance Ingredient), Citral (Fragrance Ingredient), Sodium Hydroxide (pH Adjuster), Citronellol (Fragrance Ingredient), Leptospermum Petersonii Oil (Fragrance Ingredient), Citric Acid (pH Adjuster), Tocopherol (Antioxidant), CI 77891/Titanium Dioxide (Colorant), CI 77492/Iron Oxides (Colorant), CI 77499/Iron Oxides (Colour), CI 77491/Iron Oxides (Colorant).

I think this is a fantastic concept, and I didn't feel guilty for popping this on my pregnant face instead of my normal "cover those nasty blemishes" makeup whose ingredients I am not sure of. However, the tea tree is rather potent, and I did feel a little self-conscious of the smell initially. But I love how spa-ish it smells.
This cream glides on the skin so smoothly which makes it very effortless to use. According to my OB, whenever I am feeling lazy, it's not the pregnancy, I'm really just lazy! LOL So, instead of opting for a paper bag over our pregnant heads might be a better solution, trust in TBS Tea Tree Flawless BB Cream to keep your skin calm and finally show that pregnancy glow you have been hearing about so much!

Here's a photo of my using the InstaBlur Primer and topped it with the Tea Tree BB Cream!
Taking care of your skin specially at night will benefit you in the years to come. At night when we sleep is when our skin rejuvenates and heals, so it's best to aid it with products that are rich in Vitamin E that will help rebuild its elasticity, reduce fine lines, and just overall plumpness!

Take your time to cleanse your skin after a long day. Apply effective moisturisers and with massaging the skin will help keep your complexion looking fresh. I use this Overnight Serum-In-Oil to massage my skin. Just like working out, the skin needs to be massaged and "worked out" to increase it's flexibility and to make the skin more firm.
FULL INGREDIENTSCaprylic/Capric Triglyceride (Emollient), Dicaprylyl Carbonate (Skin-Conditioning Agent), Triticum Vulgare Germ Oil/Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil (Emollient), Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil/Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil (Skin-Conditioning Agent), Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil/Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil (Emollient), Sesamum Indicum Seed Oil/Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil (Skin-Conditioning Agent), Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil/Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil (Skin Conditioning Agent), Sclerocarya Birrea Seed Oil (Skin Conditioning Agent), Glycine Soja Oil/Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil (Emollient/Skin Conditioner), Parfum/Fragrance (Fragrance), Tocopheryl Acetate (Antioxidant), Benzyl Benzoate (Fragrance Ingredient), Geraniol (Fragrance Ingredient), Linalool (Fragrance Ingredient), Limonene (Fragrance Ingredient), Citronellol (Fragrance Ingredient), Benzyl Salicylate (Fragrance Ingredient), Eugenol (Fragrance Ingredient), Citral (Fragrance Ingredient), Anisyl Alcohol (Fragrance Ingredient), Citric Acid (pH Adjuster).
Adding a night-time routine can really help your skin replenish itself as you sleep, particularly as it has the time to fully absorb ingredients without you adding piles and layers of makeup over the surface. I've always been a big advocate of night creams and serums (and masks!), but sometimes they can be extremely costly and seem like an unnecessary luxury on the face; but with the launch of The Body Shop's Vitamin E Overnight Serum-In-Oil, they now solve that problem. Simple to use, effective and totally affordable, these two products can offer you the skin you've always wanted to wake up to.

Just add four drops on your finger tips and warm the oil between two hands and pat on your skin and massage into your skin for 3 to five minutes until the oil is completely absorbed by the skin. Lately, this oil has replaced most of my nightly skin care regime. It is that potent and effective.
Now, EYE CREAMS. This is the best invention in the world of cosmetics. The first area that shows signs of ageing are the surrounding areas in the eyes. They show fine lines because of our facial expressions, and also crows feet as well. Eye creams or gels should be applied as early as 25 years old as a preventive and as a maintenance as we grow older.
The best way to describe this eye concentrate is, imagine a creamy gel like cream that makes it easy to spread. You pump the bottle several times to dispense the product and use the roller to massage the concentrate around the eye area. The cool steel ball will help eye bags calm down. Remember when our moms told us to apply cucumber on our eyes when they're puffy? The steal balls are cool which help the swelling go down and refresh the eyes.
This is the first time I have used a product with packaging like this and I love it. I like applying eye creams with a special wand like the ones from La Mer because it is cold and really helps the swelling go down.
I love using this eye cream because lately, I have been up about 5 to 6 times at night making me loose sleep when I have to pee (one of the joys of being pregnant!). So I usually wake up looking tired, and this eye cream is packed with firming and brightening ingredients, this eye cream will surely make you look like you have had a full night's rest!

I have been using this eye cream for about 2 nights only but I have seen instant positive results. My skin has been so thirsty this past few weeks because of all the preggy-peeing bonanza, and this eye cream hydrates the skin around the eyes!
Us pregnant women may be feeling a thousand different symptoms everyday, and this may make us feel like we don't have the strength to prettify ourselves but it only takes the right products for you. Pregnancy may make us break out, oily, and a lot of other different skin woes, but that doesn't give us the excuse to neglect our skin!

Women are the prettiest when we are pregnant because we are blissfully happy and excited for our baby, so let's show it off by taking care of our skin!

  6. Hi @TheMakeUpHaven! I've been a fan of your blog since I became a mother. Thanks for this post! I might try the Vitamine E Aqua Boost Sorbet as well. By the way, can you recommend a formula? Just thinking of buying Anmum Materna, heard a lot of good reviews about it.

    1. Hi Jasmine! Are you talking about formula for mothers or for infants? If you are talking about formula for mothers, I do not take them, not even Anmum. It's full of sugar and it has preservatives. I only took multi-vitamins religiously and an extra dose of Calcium Citrate because calcium is crucial for breastfeeding mothers. Don't believe everything they advertise on TV. Anmum has a lot of sugar and you do not need sugar to breastfeed. Stick to what's natural like cow's milk and multi-vitamins ♥ If you need to up your milk supply, load up on moringa supplements, they help a lot!
