Splurge vs. Steal (Series 3)

by - Tuesday, October 16, 2012

I had so much time to kill so I was able to drop by the department store today to shop for the third series of Splurge vs. Steal. So notebook in hand, I was able to shop for 5 more items to show you!

I had to use some stock photos for some of the products because my product shots suck! LOL Enjoy!

1. MAC Wipes (P1,500/100 pcs.) vs. SkinLite Make-up Cleansing Tissues (P99.75/30 pcs.)

The first on my list is SkinLite's Make-up Cleansing Tissues. I have been using this for a while for my clients because it's very gentle on the skin. When I was starting out as a makeup artist, I remember investing in MAC Wipes, and after being years in the industry, it was just silly to spend that much for wipes.

I have tried a few makeup remover wipes in the market, and this is the one that came closest to MAC. Well... Except the scent. MAC has a subtle fresh scent while SkinLite has kind of an aloe, tea-tree oil scent to it. It smells good, it's just a little far from that of MAC's.

I like that the seal sticks well until to the very last wipe. It keeps the wipes very moist! The wipes are very smooth and not scratchy unlike those other wipes I have tried. It really has the same texture as MAC that's why I fell in love with this brand. Plus! It's made in Korea!

You must remember though, that these are makeup remover wipes, you will still have to wash your face with a foaming cleanser to completely remove dirt and makeup. Otherwise, you will break out. Just use these wipes to loosen the makeup, this will not completely remove it.

2. Wet N' Wild 916D Ravin' Raisin (P299) vs. MAC Lipstick in Cyber (P1,000)

This is my favorite comparison. Plum lipsticks are in season now, and MAC's Cyber lipstick has been around for a while. Then Wet N' Wild came up with their Megalast Lipcolor Line (20 colors) that has a wide variety of plums. I was able to try Wet N' Wild 916D (Ravin' Raisin) last month when I was looking for a nice plum lipstick for a shoot I was going to do. That's when I came across it.

MAC Cyber lipstick is also a staple in my makeup kit because it's so nice to mix with red lipsticks. You can adjust the level of darkness with it! So I was able to make a comparison:

As you can see, the MAC lipstick is just a tad darker (and more mysterious) than the one of Wet N' Wild. But if you layer it on, you can achieve the same deepness of plum! I love WNW's semi-matte cream formula. It's not that shiny, and it's not entirely drying too! I love using this with a bare face. Just BB Cream on my face, perfectly groomed eyebrows and this lippie!

3. Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Siren (P450) vs. Kokuryu Moist Lipstick in Flame (P164)

Ok, it's one of those lippies that take a lot of guts to wear. But when you do finally get the courage to do so, it's always worth it. I love empowering it is!

I don't know how long Kokuryu's Flame has been around, but I know that Siren has been around for a couple of seasons now. The first time I tried it was last summer when I wanted to wear a bright lip color that wasn't red or pink in Boracay (Yeeeeees....).

When I bought the red lippie from Kokuryu, I saw that they had a bright orange lippie so I bought one too and decided to save it for another series. And here it is!

Don't you just love the color? I love how it can bright up the face! I love wearing this lippie with a bare face. Make it your statement. Now, the difference:

I don't know why Revlon looks pinkish here, but really they look identical (I think I should stop using my iPhone for photos!). Both lipsticks are moisturizing and they glide on like balm that's why I love them both. Kokuryu in Flame is actually close to MAC's Neon Orange lipstick as well, but I think Revlon Siren is a better comparison.

4. Jacarste Nail Polish in Red (P89.00) vs. Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in Fire (P1,800)

I have always been a fan of red polish ever since I was allowed to wear them. They have the ability to dress up any outfit!

My first bottle of Chanel nail polish in Fire (which is a fire engine red color) was back in 2007. It was a gift from a friend and I just fell in love with it. Of course, I am someone who changes nail color like underwear so I didn't want to spend that much for nail color.

So one day, I came from a nail spa with my friend and asked them to put Chanel Fire nail polish on me and went to Landmark to buy some cotton pads. That's when I saw Jacarste's red nail polish. When I got home, I removed the polish from my pinky and applied it, and I swear the polish is just UNCANNY!

Consistency wise, it's the same. One application is all it takes. Jacarste doesn't dry up easily as well and it doesn't have any funky smells. I just love it. It's one of my favorite reds.

5. L'Oreal Paris Base Magique (P945) vs. Benefit Dr. Feel Good (P1,500)

My makeup artist friend, Mela, was the first one to introduce me to Benefit's Dr. Feel Good. I love using it on women with dry skin because it makes a perfect canvas.

I am not a fan of scooping it out though, I still love jars with pumps. So I use a stainless steel spatula to scoop it out before applying it with a foundation brush.

Both have that same purpose, but the Base Magique is a little bit more melted marshmallow-ish. Make sure that you use just a thin layer on your face before applying your foundation. And remember to always cleanse, tone and moisturize! Let your skin absorb the moisturizer for at least 10 minutes before applying primer!
