#trends

Blue eyeshadow is being seen anywhere from Mary Katrantzou Spring 2013 runway, to the Grammy's on Nicole Richie. This year's spring summer trend is blue eyeshadow. A powerful and beautiful cool shade can only go two ways, either glam or tacky. So keep in mind these tips on how to sport the look without looking "soooo 80's!"

Clockwise from top: Covergirl Liquilline Blast Eyeliner in Blackfire, NARS blush in Mata Hari, K-Palette Real Lasting Eyeliner in Black, Benefit BADgal lash mascara in black, Nichido Color Intense Eye Pencil in Vivid Turquoise, MAC paint pot in Pure Creation, Shu Uemura Blossom Dream Palette in Pink, M&Co. Lipstick in Biscuit

I finally had an occasion to wear blue eyeshadow. I had a formal dinner that I attended last night, I did my makeup early so I could take photos!

Using blue eyeshadow is easy. Depending on what time of the day you're wearing it, you will have to adjust the intensity of the shadow. Since I was going to an evening event, I had to make my eye makeup intense to make up for the low light.

Apply your base color, in this case I used cream, from your lashlines to your crease. Remember to blend the edges right away since this paint pot (if you're using the same one) sets pretty quick. If you are using pressed eyeshadow powders, then you can take your time.

Highlight your brow bones with a neutral shadow like bone or champagne, this will tone down the intensity of the shade a little bit.

With a blue eyeliner pencil, line your lash lines with a thick line and blend it out with a small eyeshadow brush.

You don't have to make the shadow winged like this, it just lifts the eyes that's why I did it (I didn't get much sleep the night before so my eyes looked really tired). I also don't have creases so I simulate a crease by applying eyeshadow where a crease should take place.

Draw a thick liner line with the liquid eyeliner as close to your lash lines as you possibly can. This will help conceal the gaps in between your lashes. Using an ultra black liquid eyeliner that has strong staying power, like K-Palette's Real Lasting Eyeliner, will help keep your makeup look put together.

Line the inner rims of your eyes with a black pencil to make the look more dramatic and intense.

Dust your cheeks very lightly with blush just to give you a little bit of color and avoid contouring, this will make your look too outdated. Finish with a very nude lippie.

When trying to pull of blue eyeshadow, BLENDING is key, and keeping everything balanced is important. Focus only on one feature. For this look, I want my eyes to be the only focus, so I kept everything else nude. Blue eyes will make brown eyes pop even more!

For a day time look, skip all the black liners and just sweep a wash of blue eyeshadow on your lids keeping it concentrated from your lash lines up to just below the creases. Blend very well and apply mascara. Skip the liners, use a nude gloss, and you're good to go!

So, is this shade something you're willing to try this summer? I'd love to hear from you!

  1. I live the blue so much! I would wear a blue smokey eye for a night out maybe but during the day I've been wearing it just under the eye for it to be a little more subtle! Xx

Colors are always a good way to update your look :) You can start with colored eye liners if colored eye shadow is too drastic a change for you, or different shades of pinks and oranges of lipsticks!
