Q&A: How do you make curls look natural?

by - Sunday, April 13, 2008

Q: hi sabs! my name is mia... question, how do you use the bed head curl activator? can u give us some tips?

A: Being in the makeup industry requires us to be able to do hair styles. Honestly? I don't know how to up-style or do any hair styling when I am in shoots! I did however, learn a technique in styling my own hair. When I had long hair, my frustration was to have really straight hair, so I was always on the look out for straightening balms and serums.

When I went to Jasmine of Hairworks for a haircut, she made me embrace my natural wavy hair and she cut it into a short style that would make my natural waves come out without using a lot of products.

She recommended that I apply Schwarzkopf Osis Buff styling cream on my hair while it is still damp and just leave it to dry. The results are amazing! My natural waves came out and it doesn't look as if I had product on my hair! It was wavy, but not enough for you to say I had curly hair. Hahaha! It was soft, and it flowed. Although, when I do go out for lunch or dinner dates with my friends, I need a more styled and curled look that doesn't require a curling iron. That's when I remembered that I still had a bottle of Bed Head's UPTIGHT.

This is what I used when they photographed me for Preview's Powder Room feature. It's so easy to do! On dry hair, I sprayed it with Uptight and tied my hair into 4 sectioned buns. I just left it like that until it was time for Charles to photograph me. When I let my hair down, it had natural looking waves, and just set it with a non-sticky non-heavy hair spray called Elnett from L'Oreal Professionnel.
