NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl

#liptalktuesdays

This lippie has got to be one for the books! The first time I saw this lippie was on my friend and fellow beauty blogger, Martha Sta. Barbara of The Beauty Junkee. I saw her wearing a shade of lipstick in a perfect red and I just had to find out what it was! Then she told me that it was the lippie we all got from the Closeup Diamond Attraction launch, so YAY!! I have it!

I received this NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil from the Closeup Diamond Attraction Event press kit. This was included in the kit because it is one of Heart Evangelista's picks for must-haves in her cosmetic case, and I just fell in love with it!

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl, PhP 1,450

I know, I know, searching for a perfect red lipstick is never easy, so if you are still on the look out for that perfect red for your skin tone, then this may be it! Curious? More after the break!

There are so many red lippies out there now whether it be warm, cool, bluish, reddish, a bit orangey perhaps? The list goes on – so one day I was going to have lunch out with my girls and I decided to give this lippie a try. Believe it or not, I do not own one single lippie from NARS. In all my years as a makeup artist and blogger, I never owned one before, for real. So upon applying this lippie, I found myself staring at the most bright luscious red poppy red I’ve ever seen.
Dragon Girl wears and hugs the lips real well; it proves to be long wearing even after you drink and eat. I have timed it, and it has lasted me a full six hours of excellent coverage and looks good enough not to need a retouch until the eighth hour.

One of the best part is that it hardly transfers, so it lasts through a glass of water with ease, and won't transfer on your teeth which is even worse. It’s not moisturizing as a creamy lipstick, but it isn’t drying that it will cause the lips to flake or feel tight. But before application, you’ll want to properly prep lips in advance (or just have a good lip regimen in the evening), since this lippie does not do anything to moisturize the lips.
The Velvet Matte Lip Pencil is designed to allow you the precision of a lip pencil with the ease of all-over application like a lipstick. It’s supposed to be highly pigmented, matte, creamy (and yet velvet-y!), long-wearing, and non-drying.
To show you, Dragon Girl has a blue undertone, you can see that right away –I am loving this lippie because it suits beautiful morena skin or fair skinned women. I love wearing it during the day because it brightens up my skin tone. And my mood! Hehehe... You don't need seasons to wear red lippie too! In the makeup world there are no rules!

I have seen swatches of this shade online and it's amazing how on some people it really looks pink than it does red. But to me? It looks berry red which is perfect for my skin tone.
This is an extremely intense, vibrant cherry red with blue undertones. It’s very cool-toned and equally bright. I love how lip-hugging it looks and how it doesn't look dry as matte lipsticks would.

So for those of you who are afraid to pull off red – "man" up! Because you have to try this shade to see for yourself how it will suit you too!
On my face: Pixy Ultimate Makeup Cake in White PorcelainHappy Skin Feeling Sculptacular Face Contour Kit to contour and highlight my face, Canmake Glow Fleur Cheeks 05Shu Uemura Brow: Ink in Ash Brown for my brows, I then used Maybelline Color Show Vibrantly Bold Pencil Liner in Brown to tight line my upper lash lines, Canmake Nose Powder to contour my nose, then I curled my lashes and applied 3 coats of Maybelline HyperCurl Volum' Express Waterproof Mascara.

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS:
PROS
  • Highly pigmented!
  • Can last more than 6 hours without retouching.
  • Shade will suit any skin tone and color. For real!
  • Very compact.
  • Transfer proof.
  • Fragrance-free.
  • Long-lasting color.
  • In spite of the matte-feel of this lipstick on the lips, it won't emphasize dryness or flakes on the lips.
  • No need to be layered to get full-on color.
  • Does not bleed or feather.
  • Good price for an amazing lip product.
  • This range of lipstick has a lot of shades available to choose from.

NEUTRAL
  • I just don't like the fact that you need a pencil sharpener to use this. So you will have to bring one with you all the time.
  • Not as moisturizing as other lipsticks but it is not drying as well.
  • You will have to prep your lips before using this lipstick so you will not end up highlighting flaky lips.

CONS
  • Very hard to sharpen! I ended up wasting a lot of product because the tip kept breaking off.

Retail Price: PhP 1,450/tube

Will I re-purchase? Yes. I would try the other shades!
Will I recommend it? Yes.

  1. Wow, the color looked good on you. There are two things I loved about this, it has matte finish and it's red. I do not own a NARS makeup too because I find it too expensive but for this I would make an exception.

    1. I know what you mean about the price. They are expensive! Specially for a lip pencil that you end up wasting a lot of when you sharpen. But the pigment and texture is some what worth it specially if you find the shade that really suits your undertone and skin color! ♥

  2. This one looks the perfect red shade! I also have problems when it comes to sharpening a makeup - pencil product. I feel heart broken seeing it getting smaller :< But we really have to since these pencils enhance our lip cupids :D

  3. Sabs, what sharpener do you use for this? I read that Marta/thebeautyjunkee uses the one from Prestige. I want to find a cheaper alternative to the Nars sharpener.

    1. I use a sharpener that I have been using forever, it was given to me by my fellow makeup artist Gela Laurel which she got from the states. It sharpens quite good too -REAL good actually! That's why I was so sad when I used it and it just broke the tip off of this pencil :( I think NARS should rethink their packaging with this lipstick. When I do find a nice cheaper alternative, I will let you know! ♥

  4. Love, love, love the color on you, and how it's "transfer-proof" but the sharpener thing is such a deal-breaker (especially at that price!)

Maybe there's just something wrong with my eyes, but I just cannot pick out the blue undertone because it looks yellow to me :( How are you able to tell?

    1. I know right? Perfect shade, formula, and everything except the sharpening bit! I ended up wasting so much product which just broke my heart!

Detecting whether a shade of makeup is cool (blue) or warm (yellows and oranges) is easy :) If the shade is on the berry side with shades like berry, plum, rose, etc, then it has a blue undertone and would look best on people with cool undertones. If the product has names (or swatches) in orange tones like peach, apricot, sunsets, orange blossom, etc, then it falls under the category of warm undertones :) As you can see, the lipstick I have on has a very bright berry shade which falls under the blue family. ♥ I hope this helps!
