Clinique's Sonic System and Beyond Perfecting Foundation+Concealer

by - Friday, July 29, 2016

I have always been a fan of facial exfoliation because I love how the skin glows after. I exfoliate my face once a week, or at the most, twice.

When Clinique sent me their Sonic System I was over the moon excited! I have been obsessing over it for the past months actually and now I get to experience it myself first hand. I'm going to combine two reviews today which includes the Sonic System, and their latest foundation innovation: Beyond Perfecting Foundation+Concealer.

When I think about it, it's a bit weird how I am really digging the Clarisonic and the Clinique Sonic System. But here's the thing: I see the benefits in each of them. As far as I'm concerned, there isn't a best brush or the best sonic cleansing brush set – there is a brush/cleansing brush that is best fit for you and your skin.

I own a Clarisonic Facial Sonic Cleansing Brush as well, but this one works differently. I won't be comparing the two because for me, the two serve a different purpose. Let's focus on the Clinique Sonic System today.

The Clinique Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush is very light and compact. It fits easily in your hand and very easy to control. The small brush head that you can interchange is easy to navigate over your face. The brush bristles which the sonic brush originally comes with, are really soft with rounded edges, very ideal for skin that leans toward sensitive, and that pointed tip with shorter and slightly firmer bristles is excellent for getting at grime around the nose area and other hard to reach areas. Correct and consistent use can result in a brighter, more glowing complexion.
The wand (as I would like to call it), is thin, lightweight and vert smooth. It's really very easy to handle. Plus, it comes with a charger cradle where you can let the wand stand and let the brush head dry after each use. You don't have to keep the charger plugged though. I only plug it when I need to charge the wand.

While it's charging, there will be a blinking orange light above the switch button, and then it turns green when it's fully charged.
I think that it is worth mentioning that the Clinique cleansing brush will be easier to hold and manoeuvre than the other cleansing brushes out there – it's slimmer and lighter than a Clarisonic, and shorter than the Philips PureRadiance (which you probably saw in S&R). Available brush heads for sale for the the Clinique Sonic System are the regular brush, an acne-prone one, a deep cleansing brush, a massager, and a sponge applicator.
To use the CSS brush (Clinique Sonic System), at first you need only use the brush for one minute – but when you initially switch it on, it stops automatically after 30 seconds.  Clinique suggests to use the Sonic System correctly, you do this:

Five seconds on the forehead
Five seconds on the nose
Five seconds on the chin
Fifteen seconds on each cheek.

But when I used it their suggested way, I found myself more confused and I had trouble with that, the same way I had trouble at first with the use of my Clarisonic brush. So instead of that just lightly glide the brush on the surface of your skin in circular motions until the motor stops.

Beyond Perfecting foundation+concealer
Remember when I raved about the Clinique Repairwear Laser Focus All-Smooth Makeup SPF15 two years ago? Well, imagine that one but better. Better? Seriously? Yes! I swear this new foundation from Clinique is just as awesome.

I have a confession...
Right now? I'm really obsessed with this foundation. Completely, utterly obsessed with this new foundation. Aside from Bobbi Brown's Skin Foundation Cushion Compact SPF 50+++, I think this could be one of my favorite foundations to use during hot and humid days!
This foundation provides a little bit of sun protection which is always better than nothing. If you will be mostly indoors then the protection should be more than OK.
Clinique's "one dip of the wand" statement is true for this girl right here. I love that having to dip the wand just once can give you a nice coverage. But for women who love the really no-pores look, then you would have to build on the coverage. This has a nice medium-full coverage.

The wand comes with a little velour tip that makes dripping less likely.
I truly love the creamy consistency of this foundation. At first swatch on my hand (below), I found it to be too thick. I was a bit worried that this foundation would be too thick for our humid climate.
After spreading the product on my hand, it gives a really nice natural finish, and it wasn't that thick at all! In spite of the medium to full coverage, it felt like second skin. It kind of reminds me of Happy Skin's SS Cream with regard to consistency and creamy-ness. I guess with coverage and flexibility as well.
This is me and my pregnant skin. My skin is really dry on some areas and really oily on others. My nose is more red than it usually is because of the pregnancy, so a good foundation is really important for me.

With the wand fresh from the bottle, I didn't even try to scoop out more product. I dotted the foundation on the five areas on my skin and and used my Clinique Sonic Brush with the sponge head.
When you turn the sonic brush on, it vibrates. It's like patting a Beauty Blender on your skin, but it's super fast. All you have to do is lightly glide the wand on the surface of your skin in circular motions until the foundation is evenly spread all over your face.

If you have had your nails done at Dashing Diva, then this device would look familiar. They use their device though for exfoliating though. You can also use this foundation as a concealer alone! Just dab a little product on the areas you most need it and lightly stipple with your ring finger to blend the product.
Here I am wearing the Beyond Perfecting Foundation+Concealer under natural light (without powder). I love how my skin looks really natural and how the foundation doesn't look chalky at all.
After setting with powder, the skin still looks natural and doesn't look cakey. I love how the foundation doesn't give a pooling effect all throughout the day.

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS:

PROS
  • Lightweight!
  • Medium to full coverage.
  • Non-greasy even without setting with powder.
  • Safe for women with sensitive skin.
  • Subtle fragrance.
  • Skin adapting.
  • Melts into the skin, looks like second skin!
  • Leaves skin moisturized the whole day, so oil production is controlled.
  • Non-comedogenic.
  • Affordable!
  • Readily available! Easy to obtain.
  • Compact! You can bring it when you travel.
  • Makes the skin look glowing!
  • Adapts to most skin tones/shades.
  • I didn't have the urge to keep wiping my face with Gatsby every hour. Keeps the skin looking dewy but not oily.
  • Long-lasting! I tested it and it lasted more than 12 hours!
  • Does not cake and does not give a pooling effect on the skin.
  • Does not fade. Comparable to airbrush foundation.
  • Affordable and economical! A little product goes a long way.

NEUTRAL
  • N/A

CONS
  • N/A

How I Used It: You do not need the Sonic System to apply this foundation. You can use any tool you want, but I suggest dotting the foundation on the key areas of your face and spreading it with your chosen medium for applying foundation. If you find the foundation too light of a coverage, you can build it on for a more medium to full coverage.

Will I re-purchase? Yes.
Will I recommend it? Yes.

MY OVERALL RATING: ★★★★★+

It broke me out so badly only using it once, so it's a shame because I've heard so many good things about this foundation!! What a great post that multi- electric brush system looks great !!
