My Hair-Saving Products During Pregnancy

#tressviernes

My itchy, flaky scalp started to appear on the 10th week of my pregnancy. It's a pain in my bum because I have never made a habit out of washing my hair with shampoo and conditioner every day. I only wash my hair every 2 or 3 days, or anytime my hair smells after cooking. Otherwise, I use dry shampoo.

The reason for not shampooing everyday is because I do not want my scalp and hair to over dry, plus it is the number one reason for thinning, limp hair. So if you have thinning hair, opt for dry shampoos so that you can give your scalp enough time to recover from the damaging action of washing.
Since I got pregnant, I have not been able to visit Hairshaft for my color retouching, and treatment maintenance. So my hair had become really sticky at the ends and very dry! Ugh. I haven't gone out for a haircut either so I had to treat my hair at home with these hair and scalp saving products!

THE BODY SHOP GINGER ANTI-DANDRUFF SHAMPOO

First switch I had to make was my regular DOVE shampoo of choice. It's not the reason for my flaking, but I had to switch to an anti-dandruff shampoo to stop the flaking, it has really become unbearable lately specially when I got to my 16th week! First stop at the mall was The Body Shop. I read somewhere that their anti-dandruff shampoo was really good so I just had to get one for myself!
The Body Shop Anti-Dandruff Shampoo, PhP 375.00
This is the mildest anti-dandruff shampoo that I have ever tried. It feels refreshing on the hair, and not at all heavy! The scalp feels "lighter" as you massage the shampoo in. The shampoo is gel based (which I prefer sometimes because creamy shampoos tend to leave weird slimy residues on the scalp if not washed well). It has the right consistency, neither to runny nor too thick. I had visibly less flakes in about 4 washes and this shampoo rinses out quickly and easily. Although you will have to use a conditioner after because it can leave the hair in tangles and it may be too hard to comb after.

This antidandruff shampoo removes hair oil effectively (when you haven't washed your hair for a while) leaving the hair very light and airy, but NOT dry, if that makes sense. My hair and scalp look and feel very clean, and hardly any flakes when I brush my hair. In my opinion, its organic ingredients are more effective compared to using zinc. Most brands that have anti-dandruff shampoos use zinc as a fighting agent against icky flakes, the problem with zinc is that it leaves nasty residues on the hair that makes the hair too dry.

Ginger is the main ingredient with this shampoo. This plant is known to have anti-bacterial effects. Ginger fights the bacteria build-up which causes itchiness leading to dandruff (I know right? Gross). Oh, did I mention that this shampoo is silicone free? It also reduces hair fall, and it's not tested on animals.
DOVE DAILY HAIR VITAMIN

Dove's Daily Hair Vitamin has been a part of my hair regimen ever since I got to try it at the launch a couple of months ago. I have made the conclusion that I can't live without this! It's safe for preggos too!

Since I have naturally wavy and really annoying frizzy baby hairs, I can't live without blowdrying my hair after showering. Plus, I hate the feeling of having to leave the house with wet hair, or going to bed with wet hair for that matter. This hair vitamin protects and repairs my hair from heat!

You can view how wavy and poofy my hair is, and how I sometimes iron it to keep it tame HERE.
DOVE Daily Hair Vitamin, PhP 75.00/pack
I haven't had a hair cut in months and imagine, with all the heat styling I do and hair sprays, one would think that my hair would be brittle and have so much split ends by now. But miraculously, this hair vitamin has protected my hair and I don't have any split ends at all -and when I say at all, I mean, not a strand with split ends!
It comes in capsules, like those vitamin capsules for skin care, but this one has a tip that can't easily be pulled or twisted off, you will need a pair of scissors handy to be able to dispense product onto your palm. According to the directions though, you can pinch off the tip but you won't want to risk spilling any products.
Dove Daily Hair Vitamin costs only PhP 75.00 per pack, and a pack has 6 capsules! So it comes out to about PhP12.50 per hair wash. It's available everywhere too! Mercury Drugstores, Rustans Watson's, Supermarkets, Shopwise Supermarkets, and Robinsons Supermarkets nationwide.

My hair has become so manageable and has given my hair a very healthy shine and bounce. I will show you later how I apply to apply it effectively as we were taught at the launch!
L'OREAL MYTHIC OIL

Since my hair can be poofy and really wavy without conditioners or any serums, I can't live without hair oils to really tame my hair. What I love about L'Oreal's Mythic Oil is that it doesn't weigh the hair down, plus it keeps my hair so protected from heat styling tools. And I think this oil may have stimulated hair growth as well.

This new Mythic Oil nourishing oil use powerful oils to balance the hair leaving it light at the roots and nourished at the ends for a weightless finish. It's suitable for straight, wavy or curly hair too!

- Precious oils deliver vibrant shine.

- Paraben-free formula.

- Light enough for everyday use.
L'Oreal Professionel Mythic Oil 125ml, PhP 995
Just two pumps is more than enough to cover my entire hair. My hair now hangs up to just below my rib cage so this product is really economical too. It doesn't make the scalp feel greasy even if you do not wash your hair for two days. Yes, it is a little bit steep with a whopping PhP995.00 price tag for 125ml, but it really keeps hair very tame and the most important is that it nourishes real dry and brittle hair which makes it very well worth it.

You can apply this and style your hair as you would normally. Inspite of it being labeled as "oil", it can hold curls pretty well. Safe for us preggos too! (double yay!)
CREAM SILK DAILY TREATMENT HAIR FALL DEFENSE CONDITIONER

I have been having hair falls like crazy and according to my OB, it's pretty normal because of all the hormonal changes. Although she tells me that it will all grow back and would keep "shedding" all throughout my pregnancy, I do have so much baby hairs now! My bald spots on either sides of my head have grown thick hair! I am one shy step from being a hairy beast.
Cream Silk Daily Treatment Hair Fall Defense, PhP 134.00
I can't live without conditioners, because as I have mentioned, my hair is BIG plus the humidity really makes my hair go cray cray wavy and some days frizzy. I found that this CREAM SILK Hair Fall Defense has minimized my hair fall! I still get them but it's not as much as before using this brand.

... Not to mention, it has a fragrance that I can tolerate as well. Pregnant? You know what I mean about fragrance aversions. Ha!
THEBALM EN ROOT HAIR SPRAY FLEXIBLE HOLD

After curling my hair and setting with velcro curlers, I finish up with The Balm's Hair Spray Flexible Hold which is paraben free and is preggo safe! It reminds me of L'Oreal's Elnett Hair Spray. It holds curls really well and yet gives a very nice bounce to the hair! It doesn't look like rock solid hair. This is my current favorite hairspray.
It gives a very natural and flexible hold so that your hair doesn't look too Imeldific -you know what I mean, very Sta Cruzan type of hold. When I say flexible, your hair moves naturally with your head and not like you have a stuff broom on top of your head.
It's safe for color treated hair, and HUMIDITY RESISTANT! Yay! This is the best part about it. It smells great too! Paraben free so you can be sure that it's safe while pregnant. Although just because it's paraben free, it does't mean you can really sniff-all-you-want when you spray. Hahaha! I still hold my breath though.

MY STEP-BY-STEP HAIR REGIMEN

So this is how I treat my dry-pregnancy hair: after shampooing with my The Body Shop Ginger Anti-Dandruff Shampoo, I use my Cream Silk Daily Treatment Hair Fall Defense Conditioner. I leave it on for about 3 minutes while I soap myself and rinse it off. Don't forget to really rinse all of the products off from your hair and your scalp! Use cool water to trap in the moisture in your hair.

After towel drying my hair, I use a wide-tooth comb to untangle my hair. And then I pop one of my DOVE Daily Hair Vitamin out of it's container. With my long hair, it's more than enough actually! Some people use two, but I find that one capsule is enough.
I cut off the tip with a pair of scissors, be careful not to squeeze the capsule or it might spill!
I pour a little amount at first, and rub my hands together to "heat" the oil. You can dispense four equal parts. you will get used to how much is in the capsule after a while.
I then apply it to one of two sections of my hair concentrating only on the tips working my way up towards the top. Most of the product should be deposited at the tips of your hair where it hardly gets any nourishment.
Careful not to rub your hands together with your hair in between your palms because this damages hair as well! So Just apply it moving your palms together going downwards not going against the grain of your hair. Apply first at the tips, and then the next apply from the middle, and then apply from the top to the tips.
Comb through your hair with a wide-tooth comb to spread the product all over your hair. After applying my hair vitamin, I then apply 2 pumps of L'Oreal Mythic Oil all over my hair again concentrating on the tips. Then comb your hair again to spread the product.

I told you my hair was wavy. Even without it drying yet you can see how wavy my hair is. Anyway, style as usual.
Here's my hair at the DOVE Daily Hair Vitamin event, check out how nice and shiny my hair was after the treatment! It's shiny, light and bouncy. Not to mention, it held my curls very well until I brushed out my hair.
