Hair Care Week: DAY 5 Repairing Damages

#haircareweek #productreview #tressviernes

Noticing that my tips have gone dry, I refused to have my tips trimmed at the salon because I wanted to see if I could find a product out there that would help repair the ugly dry tips of my hair... Or at least make it look a little bit decent. Ha!

I have been told that Argan Oil or Moroccan Oil is best for dry, damaged hair. I have a bottle of 100% Pure Argan Oil from Snoe (PhP 799 for 20ml) and it has done wonders for my scalp (you just have to wash it off after a day because it weighs the hair down). But since I already know that Argan Oil works, I wanted to try something else. Argan Oils (specially pure ones) really cost a lot because it's very meticulous to make. So watch out for cheap Argan Oils in the market, chances are, they're not pure.

Ellips Hair Vitamin 50pcs, PhP 309.00
I was going to buy another hair mask for my hair but I came across this hair vitamin at Landmark this afternoon. Let's begin with the packaging. I love the bottle. It is housed in a very sturdy, thick plastic with desiccant to avoid the capsules from sticking together. Although pure moroccan and argan oils are supposed to be housed in dark colored bottles so as to not change the composition of the oils, this was my first question in my head about this product.

I like the safety seal because it is very tamper proof. Just remember to always buy products with seals that haven't been tampered with.

The only thing I didn't like about the packaging is that the label is printed on clear bottle so you can't really read the information about product. At the department store, I had to squint and strain my eyes just to read it. At home, I inserted a piece of paper inside the bottle so I can read everything that's printed on there.

Let's break it down. How is Moroccan Oil different from Argan oil? There are two types Argan oil produced from the same Argan nuts but for each oil the nuts are processed in a different way.

The thing that sets them both apart are the actual ingredients:
Moroccan Oil ingredients: Cyclomethicone, Dimethicone, Argania Spinosa Kernal Oil, Parfum, Linum Usitatissimum (Linseed) Seed Extract, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Benzyl Benzoate, Alpha – Isomethyl Ionone, CI 26100 (Red 170, CI 47000 (Yellow 11).
The only way to understand how Moroccanoil works is to know about each ingredient:
Cyclomethicone - A silicone that leaves the surface (hair or skin) smooth.
Dimethicone - Another silicone; it helps to keep the hair detangled.
Linum Usitatissimum (Linseed) Seed Extract - Rich in essential fatty acids, aids hair growth and helps strengthen the hair.
Butylphenyl Methylpropional - A synthetic fragrance which gives cosmetics their scent.
Benzyl Benzoate - Uses include food additive, insecticide and a plasticiser.
Alpha – Isomethyl Ionone - Another fragrance.

I'm not even going to pretend that I know any of those ingredients, or what they really do for you hair. I did my research but I didn't find one ingredients that makes up Moroccan Oil in this product -well, I did recognize one ingredient: Argania Spinosa Oil.

The tab of the capsule doesn't come off easily so you need to twist it several times for it to come off. It has a very thick consistency. Almost like a very thick face primer (that's how it feels like too).  As you may already know, you should rub products like these between your palms to "heat" the product so it gets absorbed quickly into your hair.

I smoothed the treatment only on the tips of my hair because that's where is has more damage. plus, I didn't want my hair to get oily since I just washed it. Immediately after, the tips of my hair felt softer. But about an hour or 2 lately, I had different results.

MY THOUGHTS:
  • Product did manage my dry ends easily but the product weighed my hair down and made my scalp feel oily.
  • Temporary fix for dry ends, but this is not a cure. Maybe Argan oil is a much better treatment because of it's purest form -no sillicone!
  • Contains only a fragment of Argan oil (to be found in the bottom of the ingredients list).
  • A little bit pricey.
  • Readily available almost everywhere!
  • Contains too much silicone. I won't recommend this to anyone who has severe allergies to silicone. Silicone can cause some people to break out.
  • My hair did feel a bit thicker after 3 nights of use.
  • Doesn't smell natural. Although I am not a vegan or vegetarian, I just found the smell of this product too artificial but with fragrance. It's not bad smelling, just not natural.
  • Makes hair uber shiny bringing out the color of my newly dyed hair!
  • It's main ingredient is SILICONE. Silicone, as you may already know is not exactly a cause for concern, but something you need to know about silicone on your hair is:
Using silicones on your hair will not give you any long term benefits at all. All that silicone does is give the appearance of healthy and shiny hair. Silicones simply coat the hair strands to make them appear smoother, less frizzy and shinier. -www.pinksith.com
Frankly, I think I would rather go for the pure, unadulterated, Argan Oil. Its results and testimonials have been so positive and proven to heal damaged hair. It may cost a lot more (specially 100% pure ones), but the results are worth it.

MY OVERALL RATING: ★★☆

What is your take on Moroccan Oils? Have you tried them before and what are the changes that you noticed?

  5. I like using these capsules just because I find them cute, hahaha! I have a few argan oil samples that I should probably try because I recently got my hair double ombre'd and digi permed (hair meanie, I know!) but do you think that a capsule dose is enough? :)

    1. Yes, I would go with the argan oil instead of these capsules. As I mentioned, it contians a lot of silicone -which is not exactly bad for the hair but it's not really repairing the damages. It's a temporary quick fix for dry hair. If you have dry damaged hair because of coloring and digital perming, you should mask your hair at least once a week. I do this after shampooing my hair! I wring out the water and apply a generous amount of hair mask on my hair and leave it on for 30-45 minutes under a plastic wrap or a shower cap. Rinse with cold water to trap in the treatment into the hair ♥
